"My grandsons play with the videos."
hy, when mainstream journalists discuss society’s consumption of television and the movies, do they say “we” yet when talking about video games, it’s always “they”?
Why are stories about video games relegated to the Technology section (which most readers skip) while fallen beauty queen Carrie Prejean and her asinine comments get full “Arts” treatment?
One of Canada’s largest newspapers, The National Post, ran an Arts and Life piece this weekend about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which began like this:
If you don’t pay attention to video games too often, who will blame you? Few released during the last decade of first-person-shooter ennui would rate as compelling creations of the human imagination compared to, say, great books or music or even iPhone apps … As a non-gamer, what should one know about this latest Bruckheimeresque death-fest as a cultural phenomenon?
Thank you Niles Crane, that’s great. Say hi to Maris.
It’s getting ridiculous. Even with a full 50% of adults now gaming, with games out-grossing Hollywood, with game studios drawing first-rate creative talent; and now, with Modern Warfare 2 bringing in $310 Million on its first day (a record, by a long shot, for any medium), gaming somehow still isn’t as “legitimate” a form of entertainment as movies or TV.
Nearly everyone in front of a camera, from 11 o’clock anchors on down to entertainment correspondents, still deliberately disassociates from games and gamers. Why? Games are still “a kid’s thing” in the eyes of their bosses, maybe? Well, Modern Warfare 2 is out and I’m happy about it, and I intend to play it to death, and I’m saying so in print; but then I don’t write for the National Post.
Speaking of Modern Warfare 2, but without doing a comprehensive review, as there are plenty of those already:
I didn’t mind that its campaign is convoluted and way-too-short, because the multiplayer rules. With new maps, new perks, new weapons, great graphics, and a massive install base (nearly 5 million people bought this game on the first day alone) to ensure a steady supply of opponents and availability of multiple match types, this is an online multiplayer gamer’s dream. And I love FPS. Specifically, I love FPS with friends, where everyone has a mic—it’s become the gaming scenario I like the most.
Has all the shooting made me violent? Yes, of course. I punch more or less everyone I meet. Not ten minutes ago I beat my cat with a broom handle. And I’m cold as I’m writing this, because in a fit of rage I punched out the window next to my computer. As a gamer, that’s just how I roll.
But with regard to mainstream media’s handling of video games:
I don’t like it, and I blame the baby boomers. They still call the shots in big media for the most part, and they don’t “get” gaming, but of course they love movies and TV.
Not to be an ageist or anything, but here’s the thing: baby boomers are retarded. But I mean that in the literal, less derogatory sense.
Boomers have some general knowledge, of course, and they’re not entirely useless; many of them know how to build a solarium, maybe balance a checkbook—good practical stuff. And that’s pretty neat. But the thing is, home computers and video games didn’t come into existence until well after their brains became old, inflexible and unteachable, incapable of developing those specific neural pathways which enable regular people to effortlessly interact with little devices covered in buttons.
This is why you can use a computer mouse like it’s an extension of your body, and your mother handles it like a nun disposing of a littered condom. See?
Speaking of moms, it’s my guess that many Boomers associate video games with ungrateful teenager who perpetually tuned them out at the exact moment they were trying to relay dinner preparation instructions. And you know how it goes: they can’t hate the player, so they hate the game (or at least harbor a simmering resentment towards it).
But blue skies ahead; the population is aging and increasing numbers of those who marginalize gaming are dead. And of those still around, many aren’t completely sure how to unlock the keypads on their mobile telephones, in the event they need to dial 911.
And there is the occasional voice of reason in the mainstream press. Claudine Beaumont of The Daily Telegraph in London wrote this weekend that video games and their industry “can’t be ignored.” Nice work, Claudine, you rule. Granted she’s the “Technology Editor” and is probably supposed to say things like that (“they,” remember?) but it’s still progress.
But who knows, by Modern Warfare 5 or 6, maybe journalists will talk about it without reserve, without worry that someone might question their degree of sophistication or their maturity, because they seem too “into it.”

Hi
I am definitely bookmarking this page and sharing it with my friends.
great post as usual .. thanks .. you just gave me a few more ideas to play with
Paul, the data which indicates that 50% of adults play video games should be taken with a grain of salt… older folks are more likely to play solitaire, facebook apps, that kind of thing. I think only 1/3 play consoles. But give it 5-10 more years and these numbers are going to change again, I think.

The funny thing is, quite a few of them WANT to "get" gaming… look at what happened with the Wii.

Nice rant, totally agree. But if you're going to rag on old media you should really have a copyeditor do a once-over, you have a lot of typos and such. Just sayin'.
[...] Gaming is Not Newsworthy Unless, someone comes along and complain about gaming violence. (sidemission . . .) [...]

If you look to TV or newspapers to provide relevant and insightful information on the video game industry, you're barking up the wrong tree. Gaming is a niche within the more "traditional" media outlets because they are currently ruled by boomers. Until generation X and Y take over the power structures of television and newspapers, the target audience will remain the same. Seriously, do you regularly pay for and read a newspaper? How much attention do you pay to network newscasts? They might be able to report on political and economic issues, but their understanding of modern lifestyle leaves a lot to be desired. This goes a long way to explaining why newspapers are struggling and why national broadcasters are losing their audiences to specialty cable channels.
A few comments: if you did write for the National Post, the typos would have been easily explained. Please keep in mind, though, that although you mention that 50% of adults play video games, that's made up, in large part by Gen X and Y. Baby boomers don't get gaming, in that respect you are correct. Their escapism is with more traditional media. And the journalists whose feet you are holding to the fire are either of the boomer generation or are answering to boomers. TV, radio, and newspapers are boomer media outlets. Gen X and Y are more likely to get their info online, where, incidentally, news of the gaming industry is thriving.
FuNnY!
Dude, Video games are what make the world go round!
